What certification actually changes

Plenty of places will print a photograph on nice paper. Certification is a narrower claim: Canson and Hahnemühle audit the studio's process and colour management against their own reference, and the certificate is what lets us say a print on their stock will behave the way the manufacturer intends - the same blacks, the same tonal separation, the same colour a year from now.

In practice that matters most when a print has to match something. An edition reprinted two years after the first run. A triptych where three sheets have to agree. A reproduction that has to hang beside the original painting without looking like a photocopy of it. Those are the jobs where a colour-managed workflow stops being a marketing line and starts being the whole job.

It also means we can tell you when not to spend the money. Not every image needs cotton rag, and a matte fine art stock will flatten a photograph that wanted gloss. Bring the work in and we will say so.

The advantage of a print studio you can walk into

Most fine art printing in Australia is done at arm's length: you upload a file, choose a paper from a list of names, and find out what you actually bought when the tube arrives. It works, until the print is a half-stop darker than the screen promised, or the paper's texture eats the detail you were selling.

Being in Canberra changes the shape of that. Artists and photographers across the ACT use the studio the way you would use a darkroom: come in with the file, look at a test strip on the real stock under consistent light, and adjust before committing to a full-size run. It is the difference between approving a print and approving a description of one.

That is also the fastest way to choose paper. We keep the stocks we print on in the studio, so you can put the same image on a cotton rag, a smooth photo paper and a textured matte side by side and pick with your eyes rather than from a specification table.

Printing typically takes 2-4 working days once files are approved. If you are working to an exhibition or submission deadline, tell us the date up front and we will plan production around it rather than around our queue.
