Restoration begins with the scan, not the retouching

Retouching is digital work and could in principle happen anywhere. What cannot happen anywhere is the first step: getting a faithful, high-resolution capture of a damaged original without doing it further harm.

That step decides the ceiling of everything after it. A photograph flattened under a heavy lid can crack. One photographed off-angle carries distortion that has to be corrected later, softening detail. A capture that clips the highlights throws away the very information a restorer needs to rebuild a washed-out sky or a bleached face.

So the honest local argument for restoration is not that pixels travel badly - it is that fragile originals do. Bringing yours to Fyshwick means the capture is done under controlled light by someone who has handled the difficult cases, and the photograph goes home with you the same visit if you would rather not leave it.

The work divides roughly into damage and age. Damage is physical: tears, missing corners, creases, insect and water marks, adhesive residue, prints that have fused to the glass of a frame. Age is chemical: overall fading, colour casts as one dye layer outlasts the others, silvering on old black-and-white prints, the orange shift that afflicts colour prints from the 1970s and 80s.

Both are repairable, but they are not equally quick, and neither is priced by guesswork - restoration is quoted in 15-minute increments against the actual condition of the photograph rather than a flat per-image fee. A single clean tear is a short job. A portrait missing half a face has to be rebuilt by a person making judgement calls about what was there, and it is priced accordingly.

Once restored, the file can be printed on archival paper in the same building and framed alongside it, which is usually the point: the restored version goes on the wall and the fragile original goes back into storage.
